About Us

We Are Hip-Hop: A Living Culture

Hip-hop is not just a genre; it's a culture, a voice, and a movement. Born in the streets of the Bronx in the 1970s, it has since traversed the globe, influencing fashion, politics, and language. Its beats narrate stories of resilience, struggle, love, and ambition. Graffiti art, breakdancing, and lyrical prowess comprise its essence, offering a platform for self-expression. As we nod our heads to its rhythm, we must remember: hip-hop is us. It mirrors our collective aspirations, challenges, and triumphs. Embracing it means embracing a rich, dynamic history and future. We are hip-hop, and its pulse runs through our veins.

We judge DJs within our community by the quality of their creativity, content and a pledge that they will not go quietly while we are witnessing hardship and injustice.

The Core Values or Principles of Hip-Hop

  • Peace
  • Love
  • Unity
  • Having Fun

These principles were set forth as guiding values for the hip-hop movement, aiming to foster community, positive engagement, and a constructive approach to the arts and the broader culture.

The Four Original Elements of Hip-Hop

  • MCing (or rapping)
  • DJing (turntablism)
  • B-boying (breakdancing)
  • Graffiti writing
  • It's worth noting that Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation often also added a fifth element, which is "Knowledge, Culture, and Overstanding" (sometimes just referred to as "Knowledge"). This emphasizes the importance of consciousness and awareness in the hip-hop movement.

Hip-Hop Influence

Hip-hop, originating in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s, has grown to become a globally influential cultural phenomenon, affecting multiple sectors of society including music, fashion, dance, and visual arts. Here's a brief breakdown of its worldwide influence:

  • Music: Hip-hop has become one of the most dominant and influential music genres globally. From France's thriving rap scene to South Korea's K-hip-hop, the style and sound of hip-hop are being molded and represented in diverse ways across different countries.
  • Dance: Breakdancing, or b-boying, is a dance form that originated with hip-hop. Now, one can find breakdancing crews from Japan to South Africa competing in international competitions.
  • Fashion: Streetwear, sneakers, and the urban fashion style that originated from hip-hop culture have become mainstream. Brands like Supreme, Off-White, and Yeezy have global appeal, while localized interpretations of streetwear thrive in many countries.
  • Art and Graffiti: Street art and graffiti, though not exclusive to hip-hop, have been heavily influenced by the culture. Cities worldwide have adopted or combat graffiti, and some even host street art festivals.
  • Language: Hip-hop has added to global slang and the way people talk. Phrases and terminology from rap lyrics often find their way into everyday language.
  • Social and Political Impact: Hip-hop has always been a voice for the marginalized and oppressed. Its lyrics often address systemic issues, police brutality, poverty, and racism. As it's spread globally, artists worldwide use it to address local socio-political issues.
  • Business and Economics: Hip-hop has influenced consumer behavior and trends. From Jay-Z's Tidal to Dr. Dre's Beats, rappers have evolved into entrepreneurs, impacting global markets.
  • Film and Television: Movies like "8 Mile," "Straight Outta Compton," and TV shows like "Empire" have showcased hip-hop culture. Meanwhile, countries have produced their own films centered around local hip-hop scenes.
  • Digital and Social Media: Platforms like SoundCloud have allowed rappers from anywhere to share their music. TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have further amplified hip-hop songs and dances, making them viral sensations.
  • Cultural Exchange: As hip-hop has been localized in different countries, there's been a two-way cultural exchange. For instance, elements of Korean culture have been integrated into the global hip-hop scene through K-pop and K-hip-hop.

In conclusion, hip-hop's influence is vast and continues to permeate borders, bridging cultural divides and continuously evolving as it gets adopted and adapted by different cultures worldwide.
